Root of Generations

Devota Mapenda, a Congolese refugee in Gorom camp, South Sudan, faced a bleak reality. With a family of seven to support and her husband disabled after a severe knee injury, life was a constant struggle. Their limited resources were dwindling, and the future seemed bleak. Then, a lifeline emerged. Cohere's Emergency Pooled Funds through Root of Generations to implement (Pathways to Self-Reliance) program, implemented by Root of Generation, brought hope to Devota's doorstep. Through comprehensive training – from essential life skills and trauma healing to developing her entrepreneurial spirit – Devota began to rediscover her strength. Within weeks, a remarkable transformation unfolded. Devota, a skilled seamstress, leveraged her talent to build a thriving business. The purchase of a second sewing machine, made possible through the program's support, significantly increased her earning potential. Now, she earns an average of $6 per day, a significant income for her family in the camp. This newfound income allows her to provide nutritious meals, build a small savings, and even consider expanding her business further. "Before, I felt trapped," shares Devota, her eyes shining with newfound hope. "Now, I feel empowered. I'm providing for my family, and I'm building a better life for myself and my family."
