About
AGIR POUR L'ENVIRONNEMENT (APE) is a Burundian national NGO dedicated to community empowerment and environmental sustainability through innovative, grassroots solutions. With five years of field experience, we specialize in implementing practical interventions that address poverty, environmental degradation, and social exclusion through community-led approaches in the province of Buhumuza. Our current flagship initiative operates at the intersection of humanitarian assistance and sustainable development, focusing on two key refugee settlements located in Buhumuza Province:The established Kavumu Refugee Camp in Buhumuza ProvinceThe newly emerging Busuma settlement in Buhumuza ProvinceIn Kavumuwe have previously implemented a critical environmental protection project that addressed the dangerous expansion of ravines threatening the camp's infrastructure and resident safety. This intervention successfully stabilized vulnerable areas and prevented further erosion that could have displaced refugee shelters. Building on this experience, we have evolved our approach to launch the Kavumu Green Initiative a comprehensive "smart camp" solution that transforms waste management through community mobilization, sustainable infrastructure, and circular economy principles. In Busumathe new settlement emerging due to the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, we are applying lessons learned from Kavumu while developing tailored interventions for this evolving context. The increasing refugee arrivals due to the DRC crisis are intensifying pressure on local natural resources and exposing new arrivals to unmanaged environmental risks. Our current needs are twofold:Urgent Environmental Protection Needs: The Busuma site, established rapidly in response to sudden influx, presents significant geomorphological vulnerabilities including erosion risks, potential landslides, and a critical absence of basic waste and wastewater management infrastructure. Immediate intervention is required to prevent environmental degradation that could threaten both refugee safety and local ecosystems.Integrated Socio-Economic Empowerment Needs: The growing refugee populations in both Kavumu and Busuma require expanded sustainable livelihood opportunities. We need to develop green income-generating activities that transform environmental challenges – such as plastic waste accumulation – into resources for crafts and construction, thereby reducing dependence on humanitarian assistance.Community Capacity Building Needs: There is an urgent requirement to train "Green Champions" among both refugee and host communities to serve as change agents in environmental management, hygiene promotion, and local solution implementation.Strategic Partnership and Funding Needs: We require strengthened technical and financial partnerships to replicate and adapt proven solutions from Kavumu to Busuma, particularly in a context of limited resources and increasing humanitarian demands. What distinguishes APE is our integrated model that combines environmental management, sustainable livelihood creation (through bamboo crafts and plastic upcycling), and social cohesion building between refugee and host communities. Our methodology emphasizes participatory design, capacity building, and scalable innovation, with strategic partnerships with humanitarian agencies, local authorities, and community organizations.Building on our past experience in physical protection at Kavumu, we aim to create resilient ecosystems where humanitarian challenges become drivers for sustainable social and environmental innovation.
