Turning Plastics Waste To Learning Materials!

#Population growth increases plastics demand which eventually increases waste.

Through Plastics To Learning (P2L) initiative, we engaged 34 young refugees aged 12-25 years in Zone Two of Imvepi refugee settlement to test the idea of turning #plastic wastes into durable learning materials for learners aged 3 to 6 years.

At the event, a village peer educator delivered awareness on adolescence, and HIV/AIDS.

With the guidance of Point C Nursery’s caregivers, the young #refugees repurposed plastic waste into 85 learning materials including 30 number cards, 54 letter cards and 1 shape.

This activity resulted into production of 85 learning materials, improved skills in plastic recycling, and increased community awareness on SDGs.

P2L contributes to #SDGs 4 on quality education, 10 on reduced inequalities, 12 on responsible production and consumption, and 13 on #Climate action.

Set to enhance learning for refugee children

Imvepi refugee settlement, Uganda: Today June 19th 2026, Allvox (AV) met with Point C nursery in Zone Two to advance their plan to make durable learning materials for learners out of local materials.

AV’s Executive Director, Mr. Alison LEMERI met with Point C nursery Lead Caregiver Mr. Isaac Laila where they discussed about the school’s material gaps, immediate needs, local resource assessment and mobilization. One of the most pressing issues include shortage of sustainable learning materials for children aged 3 to 6 years. The leaders also reviewed the existing material quality and strategies to improve the upcoming ones.

AV’s upcoming partnership with Point C nursery seeks to create an environmentally conscious and sustainable learning space for under-resourced refugee learners.

Update on security service meeting

On June 18, 2026, Allvox (AV) was pleased to participate in the security service meeting in Imvepi refugee settlement with over 150 refugee community members from villages 11, 7, 8, 6, 10 and 5 in attendance.

Organized by Uganda Law Society in collaboration with DRC, the event was held  at Christ The King church in Zone Two, featuring remarks, question and answer sessions between officials from OPM, Police, DRC  and refugee community members.

The meeting aimed at documenting progress and refugee concerns relating to security situation, services of law enforcers, and refugee observance of local laws and orders. In this interactive session, refugees cited logistical challenges limiting access to justice in which DRC pledged to address.

The platform also provided an immediate opportunity for policy makers, enforcers, partners and refugees to identify and fix protection gaps with officials pledging to address other pending challenges.

What is Ecowall and how does it help in climate adaptation?

In Imvepi refugee settlement, Uganda, AllVox (AV) is scaling Ecowall, a traditional technology for tree growing in rain-scarce area. Ecowall, is a local eco-friendly fence built with stones or bricks and mortar around the trees.

As he explains, Ecowall performs four main functions:

1. Protection of trees from animals, kids or strong wind destruction

2. Containment of water around trees, preventing outflow

3. Reservation of sufficient fertile zone around the trees

4. Provision of space for mulching and manure addition

Reida – ‘I will look after my jackfruits like a child’

From Imvepi refugee settlement, Uganda, we have Reida, one of the 25 household beneficiaries growing 50 jackfruits transplanted in village 6 of Zone Two early this month.

Reida constructed 2 Ecowalls around them. Interestingly, She adapts to the heatwave, introducing drip irrigation to her jack fruit trees to keep the area moist.

“One of the benefits of these jackfruits is that i can sell their fruits to get income. So I will maintain them well. I will spray the agricultural residues under them. If there’s manure, I will also put. All the time, I will look after them just like a child because if I take proper care of them, they will grow but if I don’t take proper care of them, they will not grow well. Thank you so much for paying attention to our needs”.

Supervising trees!

Imvepi refugee settlement, Uganda: Our executive director Mr. Alison LEMERI visited some tree growers, beneficiaries of the Ecowall4Tree project that transplanted 50 jackfruits within their households in village 6 of Point I in Zone Two.

This host community beneficiary constructed the Ecowall himself. Amid the extending period without sufficient rainfall, he remains passionate to grow his jackfruits as he waters them regularly.

With the Ecowall, refugees and hosts help protect the trees from external intrusion, contain water, available enough fertile zone, and provide heavy mulching, irrigation and organic waste to the plant.

Regular monitoring is significant to the farmers' continued share of experience, lessons learned, and tackling of emerging challenges.

This project is implemented in partnership with Change Development Initiative (CDI) and Tree Replantation At Young Ornamental Level (TRAYOL).

Today June 9th 2026, Allvox (AV) participated in an enriching training organized by UNHCR focusing on partner procurement practices.

The session enabled us understand the procurement process, procurement documents, tender preparation and bidding, qualification of bidders, contract awarding, implementation and review of transactions, as well as detecting risks, weaknesses, errors and fraud potential.

One big lesson learned is to enhance procurement structure, policies and review of practices.

Introducing Ecowall4Tree project

AllVox (AV) is excited to announce the start of Ecowall4Tree, a climate initiative designed to engage 25 refugee and host households to grow fruit trees in village 6 of Point I of Imvepi refugee settlement, Terego district.

In collaboration with Change Development Initiative (CDI) and Tree Replantation At Young Ornamental Level (TRAYOL), AV works with community members to grow 50 jackfruits using the Ecowall technique, AV’s locally-tested low-cost climate adaptation technology for tree growing in drought-prone areas like Imvepi.

This one-year project has so far transplanted 50 jackfruits within 25 households,  constructed 15 Ecowalls, sensitized beneficiaries on Ecowall and the best tree growing practices like mulching, watering, inputting animal and poultry waste.

The initiative seeks to have enhanced food security, community climate awareness, and climate resilience through improved knowledge and skills in Ecowall tree growing.
