About
Kakuma Eco-Bag is a refugee-led social enterprise based in Kakuma, Turkana County, Kenya, founded in 2024. We address two urgent and connected challenges: high youth unemployment and the high cost and environmental impact of plastic packaging. In Kakuma, over 75% of youth are unemployed, while most businesses rely on plastic packaging transported over 1,000 km from Nairobi. This makes packaging expensive, with costs reaching around KES 400 per kg plus transport, and increases plastic waste in an already fragile environment. Our solution is simple and community-driven. We train refugee and host community youth to manufacture eco-friendly packaging by hand using recycled khaki paper. By producing locally, we reduce reliance on imported plastic packaging, lower costs for businesses, and keep economic value within the community.Since inception, we have trained over 300 youth and produced more than 100,000 eco-packaging items, serving restaurants, shops, schools, health centers, and food vendors. Our cooperative model—Train & Integrate, Produce & Earn, Share & Grow—ensures that youth gain skills, earn income, and share in the enterprise’s growth. Our mission is to create jobs and protect the environment using recycled materials and clean energy. We are expanding across Turkana County and building scalable workshops to increase production while maintaining quality and community ownership. Kakuma Eco-Bag demonstrates that refugee-led enterprises can reduce plastic waste, lower business costs, and build resilient local economies.
