About LIGHT ACADEMY NETWORK

Light Academy School is a refugee-led institution established in 2022 to provide quality education for both refugee and host community children. The school combines Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) with digital inclusion, social and emotional learning (SEL), and project-based approaches. Since its founding, more than 400 children have directly benefited, showing measurable improvements in literacy, numeracy, and overall engagement. Fully accredited by the Kenya National Examination Council and registered with the National Education Management Information System (NEMIS), Light Academy ensures learners are formally assessed and can progress on par with peers nationwide. Teacher Professional Growth and CBC Implementation Central to Light Academy’s success is investment in teachers. More than 20 educators participate in monthly workshops, peer mentoring, and tailored lesson design. Training emphasizes trauma-informed pedagogy, contextualized methods, and digital tools. This has improved teacher retention, classroom delivery, and learner participation while strengthening CBC implementation. Digital Inclusion Pilot To bridge the digital divide, the school introduced computer skills, e-books, and interactive content like Ubongo Kids. Large screen monitors provide group access despite limited devices and electricity. The initiative has sparked digital curiosity and confidence in learners as young as eight, preparing them for the future of work and lifelong learning. Parental Engagement Over 200 parents have been trained as SEL ambassadors and co-educators, supporting learning through storytelling, cultural practices, and home-based reinforcement. This partnership strengthens motivation, resilience, and character development. Play-Based Learning Structured play, arts, and sports are integrated into daily lessons to foster creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. Learners report greater enthusiasm for school and stronger self-belief. Impact Evidence Literacy and numeracy improved for 65% of learners in 18 months. Parents report stronger emotional bonds and learning support. Teachers report reduced disruptions and higher attendance.
