About
Founded in 2019 by members of the Nakivaale Refugee community itself, Now and Tomorrow Uganda was born out of a simple but powerful conviction: that the people closest to a problem are best placed to solve it. From its very beginning, the organisation has been refugee-led and shaped by the lived experiences, the values, and the unwavering determination of those who call Nakivaale home. In a settlement context where external actors often parachute in with predetermined solutions, Now and Tomorrow Uganda takes a radically different approach. Programs are not designed for communities - they are designed and led by communities. Our Four Pillars of Change 1. Education — Soma!!!Soma!!! The name says it all: "Read! Read!" in Swahili. Soma!!!Soma!!! is a community-based school readiness programme that meets children where they are; out of school, often far from the nearest formal classroom, frequently hungry and underprepared. The programme enrolls outof-school children, provides them with early childhood learning through community learning centres, and supports their transition into formal primary schooling. The results speak for themselves: Soma!!!Soma!!! has reached over 2,500 learners and successfully transitioned hundreds of children into formal schooling who may otherwise never have received an education. 2. Nutrition & Well-being A child who is hungry cannot learn. This is not a theory. It is something every teacher and parent in Nakivaale knows from experience. Now and Tomorrow Uganda's school feeding programme provides daily nutritious meals for enrolled children, paired with nutrition awareness programmes for families. The impact flows directly into the classroom: better attendance, stronger concentration, and healthier overall child development. 3. Agriculture — Kura!!!Kura!!! "Grow! Grow!" because lasting food security starts at the household level. The Kura!!!Kura!!! programme equips families with the training and tools to establish their own household gardens, supported by demonstration gardens and climate-resilient food production practices. Rather than creating dependency, this programme helps families build genuine self-sufficiency in their food supply.4. Economic Empowerment — Village Savings & Social Enterprises Financial vulnerability is one of the deepest roots of community fragility. Through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VESAs), financial literacy training, and support for small community enterprises, Now and Tomorrow Uganda is helping families move from surviving to thriving. Established VESAs are already enabling community members to save, invest, and build assets, often for the first time. What Makes This Model WorkCommunity-Led Implementation Programs are initiated, implemented, and sustained with active participation from the communities themselves. Hence ensuring ownership, cultural relevance, and long-term sustainability that external actors alone cannot deliver. Integrated, Not Isolated Rather than treating education, nutrition, and livelihoods as separate problems requiring separate solutions, Now and Tomorrow Uganda addresses all four simultaneously, tackling the root causes of vulnerability, not just the symptoms. Proven Community Impact Community learning centres have been created and are operating. School enrolment and retention have increased. Local structures to sustain programmes have been strengthened, and communities are mobilising their own resources to keep programmes running.
