We are privileged to have hosted HELGA ( Humanitarian Effort for Learning of the Girl Child in Africa), a host community CBO supporting women and empowerment of the girl child. Through our collaboration, we are supporting refugee girls access to both primary and secondary school through payment of school fees and levies, as well as learning materials. We are also supporting women in English literacy and equipping them with hands-on-skills that will enable them become self-employed. This will enable refugee women become self-reliant, there by reducing dependency.

Week 2 of advocating for the economic inclusion of refugees in Kitengela, Kajiado County has taken an extremely positive step as we engaged the County Government, Local administration, Sub-county administration, and security representatives. Access to business permits, high cost of permits, security of refugee businesses are among the issues addressed in this week's forums. With this turn of events, the future of refugees engaging in income-generating activities in Kitengela is bright.

This week, we commence an 8 - week advocacy program in Kitengela, advocating for the economic inclusion of refugees in Kitengela. We bring together stakeholders, among them the County Government, Local administration, refugees as well as host business community among other stakeholders. We are optimistic that this is a single step towards a long journey that will see a reduction in "market" barriers resulting in economic freedom and financial independence of refugees. The year 2024 has not been a "walk in the park" for most Refugee-led Organizations. With limited resources and zero funding in some locations, RLOs who are first responders to challenges facing refugees have had to come up with extra- ordinary measures to sustain their obligations in their communities. The change in times and circumstances has led to the establishment of Kitengela RLOs Network, a network of 9 RLOs, all empowering refugees and host community in Kitengela. So far, the network has undertaken 3 successful activities, with the latest being a peer-to-peer learning session funded and facilitated by Pamoja Trust. The session on Leadership and Governance was attended by 35 leaders representing 9 RLOs. The network's approach is based on partnerships, internal network fundraising, and resource mobilization, which has led to successful interventions. Though the approach may appear complex, it has not only reduced strain on RLOs but also maintained their relevance in the community. We believe that if this approach is nurtured, it will enhance accountability, reduce challenges in programming, enhance collaboration among RLOs, and also boost trust between RLOs and communities.

Today, our SLA members had an interactive session with our partners IRC and Equity Bank. From the discussion, it is evident that Refugee-led SLAs have the potential to pool together resources in the form of savings and lend to members at affordable terms. This approach, if embraced will enhance financial inclusion resulting in the economic independence of refugees. Developing a culture of saving will also enhance personal financial growth and readiness for emergency financial needs.

In preparation for an expansive digital skills training program for refugee and host community youth in Kitengela, our team spent part of the day setting up computers, upgrading the internet, and enhancing physical safety of our community digital space. This will guarantee the delivery of quality skills in a safe space

RLOs can bridge gaps at the community level by partnering with other RLOs to provide sustainable solutions to challenges facing refugees and host communities. Our partnership with Youth Voices Community will enable refugees and host community in Kitengela to acquire digital skills for sustained livelihoods. This is after YVC supported our Digital Skills Community Hub with 6 computers. Supporting and encouraging such initiatives empowers RLOs to provide first response to challenges facing the communities within which they are working.

We were privileged to host a team from YVC at the Pamoja Twaweza digital space for an interactive session. Among the areas identified for collaboration are advocacy, resource-sharing, and joint exchange programs.

YVC's Justice Centre for Advocacy department in partnership with Kitengela RLOs Forum hosted a community engagement in Kitengela, Kajiado County. The interactive session highlighted YVC's programs and how to collaborate with RLOs and community leaders to address the challenges facing refugees.

Josianne, a mother of 5, a widow, and a refugee from DRC has invested her borrowing from our SLA and a loan acquired as a result of IRC and Equity Bank partnership to start a shop. From the profits, she is now able to take care of her children and pay her bills with minimum stress. She no longer depends on relatives, friends, and well-wishers for a living.

The impact of SLAs can not be ignored as our members turn their passions to profitable income generating projects. For a loan as little as USD 80, Hannah one of Pamoja Twaweza SLA members is a proud owner of chicken worth an estimated USD 385. We believe that with improvements and support to SLAs, refugees, and host communities can acquire the desired self-reliance and ultimately, financial freedom.

Pamoja Twaweza CBO's financial Inclusion partnership with IRC and Equity Bank has seen members acquire loans for business start-up or expansion. Two weeks after acquiring her loan, Judy one of the CBO members who runs a shoe-selling business in Kitengela is overjoyed that she has not only been able to add quantities to her merchandise but also variety. This has led to an increase in customers resulting in more sales and higher profits. Unlike previously when Judy visited Gikomba Market in Nairobi twice a month for her merchandise, she is now able to purchase supplies weekly. This clearly indicates the impact that financial inclusion initiatives have on beneficiaries.

As a result of our tailoring and dressmaking training, we are glad to expand our fashion design income-generating project by employing two tailors to help deal with the increase in demand for our products.
