About
Pro-Right for Refugees is a refugee-led, community-based organisation operating in Kalobeyei Settlement, Turkana County, Kenya. Our mission is to promote and protect the rights of refugees, with a special focus on persons with disabilities, and to strengthen their inclusion, dignity, and access to essential services. We work to empower vulnerable individuals and communities through advocacy, protection, awareness, and direct support interventions.Founded and led by refugees, Pro-Right for Refugees addresses the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities in humanitarian settings, including barriers to healthcare, education, livelihoods, and protection services. Our activities are grounded in international human rights principles, including the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), humanitarian protection standards, and inclusive development frameworks. Our key activities include:Human rights awareness and advocacy: Conducting community sensitization, rights education, and advocacy campaigns to raise awareness on disability rights, inclusion, and protection from neglect, abuse, and discrimination.Protection and case support: Identifying, documenting, and referring cases of abuse, neglect, medical negligence, and human rights violations affecting refugees with disabilities.Healthcare and psychosocial support: Facilitating access to medical services, assistive devices, rehabilitation, and mental health support for persons with disabilities affected by neglect or trauma.Community mobilization and peer support: Strengthening networks of persons with disabilities, caregivers, and community volunteers to foster safe, inclusive, and participatory spaces.Capacity building: Training community volunteers, caregivers, and refugee leaders on protection, inclusion, and emergency preparedness to enhance local response mechanisms.Pro-Right for Refugees operates with a participatory and inclusive leadership structure, where refugees, including persons with disabilities, are actively involved in decision-making. Our leadership team includes an Executive Director, Program Coordinator, Treasurer, Secretary, Protection Lead, Disability Inclusion Focal Person, and Community Mobilization Officer. Decisions are made collectively to ensure accountability, transparency, and equitable representation.Despite limited resources, our organisation has built strong community trust and networks with local and international actors. We collaborate with Kalobeyei Community Protection Network, Kenya National Forum for Persons with Disabilities (KNPWD), Refugee-Led Organisations Network (RLON), and local humanitarian coordination forums. These partnerships enhance our reach, strengthen referral pathways, and allow us to coordinate advocacy and protection efforts effectively. Our work is carried out in a high-risk and resource-constrained environment, where insecurity, harassment, and social exclusion often limit the participation of persons with disabilities. By combining advocacy, protection, and direct support, Pro-Right for Refugees seeks to reduce vulnerabilities, improve wellbeing, and empower refugees to exercise their human rights safely and confidently.Through our interventions, we aim to ensure that persons with disabilities in Kalobeyei Settlement are visible, heard, and supported, and that their rights are upheld in all aspects of humanitarian programming and community life. Our long-term vision is a community where refugees with disabilities can live safely, access essential services, and participate fully in social, economic, and civic life.
