About

Rafiki wa Mazingira Ltd. Rafiki wa Mazingira Ltd. is a refugee-led green enterprise based in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya, transforming waste into clean energy, environmental solutions, and livelihood opportunities for displaced and host communities. Founded by Bajirenge Pascal Blaise, the organization was born from a simple but powerful mission: to restore dignity and protect the environment while creating economic opportunities for refugees who often face limited access to energy, income, and employment. In Kakuma, households rely heavily on firewood and charcoal for cooking fuels that are costly, unsustainable, and harmful to the environment and human health. At the same time, agricultural waste and invasive species such as Prosopis juliflora (locally known as mathenge) accumulate across the camp and surrounding areas, contributing to land degradation, loss of biodiversity, and increased vulnerability to climate change. Rafiki wa Mazingira turns these challenges into circular economy solutions. Our core activity is the production of clean, affordable briquettes made from agricultural waste and Prosopis. These briquettes serve as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional charcoal, reducing deforestation, improving air quality, and lowering household cooking costs. We currently produce up to 5 tonnes per week, supplying families, schools, and small businesses in both the refugee and host community markets. Beyond production, we raise awareness on clean cooking and train women and youth on briquette making, waste management, and environmental conservation, fostering local ownership and green skills.Rafiki wa Mazingira also engages in tree planting, environmental education, and community clean-up campaigns to restore degraded land and cultivate a culture of environmental responsibility. By converting harmful waste into a resource, we contribute to climate change mitigation, resilience building, and sustainable community development. Our model is built on three pillars:Environmental Impact: Reducing deforestation, carbon emissions, and waste pollution through circular economy and clean energy solutions.Economic Empowerment: Creating income-generating opportunities for refugees and host community youth and women through training, production, and distribution.Social Change: Promoting dignity, self-reliance, and innovation within refugee communities, shifting the narrative from dependency to leadership in climate solutions.Rafiki wa Mazingira collaborates with local authorities, community-based organizations, and humanitarian and development partners to scale impact. We aim to expand our production capacity, improve technology for carbonization and briquette processing, and extend distribution across Turkana County and other refugee-hosting areas. Our long-term vision is to become a regional leader in refugee-led circular economy and clean energy solutions demonstrating that refugees are not passive recipients of aid but innovators with sustainable solutions.Through our work, we are proving that environmental protection and economic empowerment can go hand in hand, even in fragile and resource-limited settings. Rafiki wa Mazingira is not only providing cleaner energy it is restoring hope, resilience, and dignity to communities that need it most.
