SOCIAL ADVOCACY FOR INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT
SAID Initiative (Social Advocacy for Integrated Development) is a refugee-led, women-led, and youth-led community-based organization based in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. The organization was founded with the mission to improve hygiene, promote gender equality, and support economic empowerment through locally driven and sustainable solutions.
Our primary focus lies in addressing hygiene and sanitation challenges in the refugee setting by promoting community-based soap-making and other WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) initiatives. We train refugee women and youth to produce affordable, eco-friendly soap that is accessible to camp residents, while at the same time creating meaningful income-generating opportunities.
Beyond soap production, SAID Initiative also engages in:
• Menstrual hygiene education and support for girls and caregivers
• Operating a soap refill station to reduce plastic waste and encourage cost-saving
• Conducting community outreach and hygiene awareness campaigns in schools, clinics, and households
• Advocating for improved WASH infrastructure and menstrual dignity
Our programs directly contribute to multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
• SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
• SDG 5: Gender Equality
• SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
• SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Led by Sadia Kuku Idris, a refugee woman and sustainable development student, SAID Initiative is rooted in lived experience and strong community networks. Our team of trained women, youth volunteers, and local facilitators ensures that our work is both inclusive and impactful.
With a deep understanding of the needs and strengths within the community, SAID Initiative continues to champion practical, sustainable, and empowering solutions for refugees in Kakuma and beyond.
