About Turkana Needy Children's Home Community Based Organization

Turkana Needy, a community-based organization (CBO), has been a steadfast force for positive change since its inception in 2007. Initially a grassroots group, the organization transitioned to a formal CBO in 2017, solidifying its commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable children in the Kakuma region. Core Activities -Child Rescue and Rehabilitation: Turkana Needy Children's home has managed to Rescue and provide care for 14 children from challenging circumstances. Turkana Needy Children's home Offers a safe and nurturing homecare environment. - Child Sponsorship: Turkana Needy Children's home Supports 10 children through our abled caregivers, by ensuring their basic needs are met. Turkana Needy Children's home Provides financial assistance for 25 children's education, covering primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Turkana Needy Children's home Indirectly supports 60 students at Meru Secondary School through a sponsorship program. Funding and Sustainability Turkana Needy relies on the generosity of well-wishers and the support of churches to sustain its operations. These contributions are vital in enabling the organization to continue its impactful work. Turkana Needy stands as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. By providing essential support, education, and protection to vulnerable children, the organization is shaping a brighter future for the next generation. Quarterly Report: ECD Activities in Nakoyo and Nayanae Ngitiira (January - March 2025) Submitted by: Turkana Needy Children’s Home CBO Date: May 11, 2025 Reporting Period: January 1, 2025 - March 31, 2025 Location: Nakoyo ECD Center & Nayanae Ngitiira ECD Center, Kakuma, Turkana West Sub-County 1. Introduction This report summarizes the key activities conducted at the Nakoyo and Nayanae Ngitiira Early Childhood Development (ECD) centers in Kakuma, Turkana West Sub-County, from January 1st to March 31st, 2025. The focus of these activities has been on promoting the feeding program, improving learning standards, formation of parental groups and fostering parental engagement to create a supportive environment for the holistic development of the children. 2. Key Activities and Achievements a. Promotion of Feeding Program: • Consistent provision of nutritious meals to children at both ECD centers. • Sensitization sessions with parents and caregivers on the importance of balanced nutrition for child development and the benefits of the school feeding program. • Monitoring of food supplies, preparation, and distribution to ensure efficiency and hygiene. • Maintained a consistent attendance rate, potentially linked to the provision of daily meals. • Increased awareness among parents regarding the nutritional needs of young children, as observed during parental meetings. b. Improving Learning Standards: • Implementation of age-appropriate and stimulating learning activities aligned with the ECD Competency Based Curriculum. • Provision of learning materials and resources, including writing books, drawing books, pencils and rubbers, crayons and building blocks • Regular monitoring of classroom activities and teacher support through observations, mentorship and training parental groups • Introduction of play-based learning and literacy corners. • Observed increased engagement and participation of children in classroom activities. • Teachers demonstrated improved skills in delivering interactive lessons from the previous social emotional trainings. • Initial assessments indications like improved recognition of letters/numbers, enhancing social interactions. • Improved classroom enrolment from 53 learners to 174 with a ratio of 94 boys to 80 girls. c. Parental Meeting Engagement: • Conducted regular parental meetings at both Nakoyo and Nayanae Ngitiira ECD centers this is thrice every month. • Utilized meetings as a platform to discuss children's progress, school activities, and the importance of parental involvement in their children's education. • Facilitated interactive sessions and workshops on topics such as hygiene practices, positive parenting, supporting learning at home and Social emotional learning during parental groups meetings. • Established/strengthened communication channels between the school and parents through WhatsApp groups, regular newsletters and during parental meeting engagements. • Witnessed increased attendance and active participation of parents in the meetings from 44 to 150 • Received positive feedback from parents regarding the usefulness of the information shared and the opportunity to engage with the school. • Observed increased parental involvement in school activities and children's learning at home. 3. Challenges Faced • limited resources this has limited the number of pupils to support, the number of children’s who needs education support is higher compared to our estimated budget. • Specific learning difficulties observed in children especially children’s who are used to look after livestock they find it difficult coping up with school. 4. Lessons Learned We have learned the importance of community involvement in school programs We have learned effective communication strategies The impact of consistent feeding and the importance of school feeding programs 5. Recommendations and Next Steps • Seeking additional resources for learning materials • Organizing more focused workshops for parents on specific topics especially with socio emotional learning to strengthen the • Exploring ways to address the identified learning challenges. Conclusion The activities conducted at Nakoyo and Nayanae Ngitiira ECD centers during the first quarter of 2025 have laid a strong foundation for supporting the children's development. The consistent feeding program, efforts to improve learning standards, and proactive parental engagement have yielded positive results.
