Comic Relief Project

Project Name:  Access to inclusion and learning for children with disabilities

o   Strengthening inclusive, quality education for children with disabilities in refugee hosting areas of Uganda

o   To enable Refugee children with target conditions access quality education delivered in an inclusive and safe environment.

o   Teachers at schools and community run learning centers in refugee hosting areas equipped with capacity to further improve delivery of safe and inclusive education.

Key activities

·         Conduct progress assessment of children with disabilities who registered less improvement in previous project

·         Organize refresher training for caregivers and outreach workers in rehabilitation and supporting inclusive learning of children with disabilities.    

·      Organize trainer of trainers for champion caregivers to prepare them train other caregivers in rehabilitation and supporting inclusive learning for children with disabilities 

o   Assessed progress of 106 children with disabilities (46 F,60M), planned new interventions to enable them improve in areas of learning, mobility, socialization, selfcare and others.   

o   Refreshed skills of 74 caregivers (60F, 14 M) in management of children with disabilities and inclusive education  

o   Conducted trainer of trainers for champion care givers in Kampala, Imvepi, Bidibidi and Rwamwanja refugee settlements.  A total of 39 caregivers were trained (29 F, 10M) in setting learning objectives, training methods, preparation of a training content, qualities of a good trainer and checking learning techniques. This will help them to train other caregivers

Developed a simple training content that trainer of trainers will use while training other caregivers in the different locations     

1.      Empowering caregivers with more skills in rehabilitation and inclusive education makes it easier to promote continued learning in the household for children with disabilities

2.      Involving caregivers whose children progressed as models /mentors will be vital in nurturing other caregivers.  

3.     Recycling assistive devices (re-use) can help to reduce the deficit of devices since some children have progressed and are no longer in need of them.
