General Report

Construction of a learning center, awareness campaign to promote access to quality inclusive education for children with disabilities in Kakuma. 

Objective: To improve access to quality, inclusive education for children with disabilities residing in the Kakuma refugee camp by establishing a dedicated learning center and continuous awareness campaign.

Key Activities:

  1. Construction of Learning Center: Build an equipped, accessible educational facility with a playground within our center, adaptable to children with disabilities.
  2. Capacity building: Provide specialized training for our facilitators/mobilizers on inclusive teaching practices and disability awareness creation.
  3. Resource Development: We purchased learning and teaching material adaptable to children with disabilities
  4. Awareness Campaign: Conduct community outreach (finding children with disabilities hidden at home) and awareness programs to promote the importance of inclusive education and reduce stigma surrounding disabilities.
  5. Partnerships and Advocacy: Collaborate with local and international organizations to support and sustain the project, ensuring long-term impact and resource availability.

We have got a fund from GWBF that contributed to creating an inclusive community by constructing a playground, raising awareness about hidden children and out of school with disabilities, and enhancing the capacity of our members. Continued efforts in maintaining the playground and sustaining awareness programs will further amplify these positive impacts over time. Trough this grant we managed 

- 207 Parents reached on parental meetings

- 112 hidden and out of school children with disabilities was find and linked to the mainstream schools

-Our office was equipped with power, office furniture's , Purchased 1 extra braille machine and papers

- We constructed and install a playground

- We 4 did capacity building on disability inclusion, awareness creation,

- We managed to partner with VNG, signed an Mou with HI(IE), we engage with global network of refugee with disabilities, We are also processing in an agreement with IRAP (Disability department)

- 367 children with/without disabilities are accessing the center and benefit from inclusive education we are offering 

We continue we SRHR program that are done through cohort that 25 adolescent girls are enjoying the program, livelihood and inclusive sport activities are ongoing.  

  1. Community Engagement : Involving the local community from the project's inception fosters a supportive environment and enhances the sustainability of the learning center. Engaging with household and local leaders helps to address disability inclusion.

  2. Inclusivity: Learning center with input from experts in accessibility and disability rights ensures that it meets the diverse needs of children with disabilities. This includes physical accessibility features, such as ramps and adapted facilities, as well as specialized educational resources.

  3. Training and Capacity Building: Equipping facilitators/mobilizers with specialized training in inclusive education and awareness creation is vital for the success of the program. Continuous professional development helps facilitators/mobilizers adapt to diverse learning needs and promotes effective teaching strategies.

  4. Awareness Campaigns : Raising awareness about disabilities and the importance of inclusive education helps challenge and change negative attitudes. Effective campaigns should involve testimonials from affected families and success stories from the learning center.

  5. Partnerships : Collaborating with local and international organizations provides additional resources, expertise, and advocacy support. These partnerships are essential for addressing challenges and ensuring long-term project sustainability.

  6. Monitoring and Evaluation: Regular assessment of the projects impact and feedback from participants helps refine approaches and improve outcomes. This iterative process ensures that the learning center continues to meet evolving needs and remains effective.
