Name of the Project: Tenda Wema Community School re-Construction.

Tenda Wema Community project, a refugee-led organisation started  in 2014 out of the need to bridge barriers to access to quality education for both refuggee and host community children. In order to achieve this noble objective Tenda Wema Community Project has started Tenda Wema Community School in 2022. Currently it has enrolled around 240 children.

The first phase of the project saw re-contruction of 8 classrooms, toilets, equiping class rooms with desks, teaching and learning materials after the demolitions of the first school structure during massive mavoko demolitions in Machakos county. The success of this phase saw the school open doors to learners in january 2024.  

The second phase of the project involved purchasing 3/8 of school land, finishing of 8 classrooms, adding some learning and teaching material, constuction of a kitchen and supporting some other school activities including staff salaries for at least one term.

Achievements:

a. purchase of 3/8 school piece of land. 3/4 of the grant was added to the other amount raised in buying this terrain. The school stands now on its own land. 

b. finishing of 8 classrooms which provides conducive learning environement. 

c. creation of emploment to teaching and non-teaching staff.

d. enrollment of 240 refugee and host community learners at the school.  

e. intergration of refugees and host community through education, thereby promoting peace and cohesion.

lessons learned:

1. not giving up. After the demolition of former Tenda wema structure, we were almost giving up. But during this project Tenda wema get encouraged and gain a sence of positivity.

2. managment of fund. during the implimentation of this project, we added some knowledge of how to manage and be accountable of any unrestricted grant.

3. priority: After the mager incident of demolitions that Tenda Wema faced, many critical issues were on the table to be adressed. However, Tenda Wema does not have enought resources to adress them. As this grant was available,Tenda Wema managed to highlit the most crucial issues to be adressed.
