Project Summary: EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH SEL at SCA Stop Child Abuse

Project Name: EMPOWERING COMMUNITIES THROUGH SOCIAL EMMOTIONAL LEARNING

Objective(s)

To cultivate social and emotional competencies within communities, focusing on children, parents, and community members. This project aims to improve children's lives by fostering positive relationships and enhancing well-being, leading to better social interactions and academic performance. By equipping parents and community members with SEL skills, we aim to create a strong support network prioritizing children's success.

Key Activities

Developing and sharing tailored SEL resources for children, parents, and community leaders. Conducting workshops on emotional literacy, conflict resolution, and communication. Supporting parent education programs focused on children's social-emotional growth. Training community leaders to champion SEL. Integrating SEL into community programs, emphasizing healthy relationships. Organizing awareness campaigns highlighting SEL's role in children's social and academic lives.

In our recent report, the project demonstrates positive community engagement with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) initiatives. Key activities included parenting sessions, designed to enhance parents' capacity to support children's emotional and social development.

These sessions, alongside meetings with community and religious leaders, aimed to deepen the understanding of children’s rights within an SEL framework. Notably, there's increased parental interest in improving communication with their children, a core aspect of SEL.

Data collection covered 20 households, gathering information on 47 children (25 male, 22female) and 24 household representatives (6 male, 18 female) from block 1 to 6 in zone 1 Kakuma2

Overall, the project shows commendable advancement in integrating SEL principles into the community.

key lessons

Include the criticality of community engagement and parental involvement for SEL promotion. The positive response to parenting sessions highlights parents' key role in children's social-emotional development.

Addressing basic needs (food, education, shelter) is crucial for project success, as these factors significantly influence children's well-being and learning. Socioeconomic factors impact education priorities, as seen in parental reluctance regarding school dropout status.

Emerging best practices

involve a community-based approach, multi-stakeholder engagement, data-driven implementation (using surveys/interviews), and a focus on improving parent-child communication.

These strategies effectively raise awareness, promote SEL, and foster a supportive environment for children's development.
