Comic Relief Project

Project Name: Scalable Community-Led Learning through Play for Refugee children with disabilities

Objectives

o   To promote learning of children with disabilities through different play activities.

o   To promote social inclusion of children with disabilities. 

o   Build capacity of caregivers in use of play to promote learning of children with disabilities.  

Key activities

·         Conduct assessment of 200 children with disabilities determined their learning needs and respective play schemes  

·         Build capacity assessment of 200 caregivers in use of play to facilitate learning of children with disabilities.    

·         200 caregivers were trained in use of play to facilitate learning of children with

·         Enhance capacity of 14 Community outreach workers in use of play to promote learning and inclusion of children with disabilities

·         Conduct progress assessment for children with disabilities to identify gaps and provide quick solutions  

·         Conduct field visits to offer technical support to all   outreach workers and caregivers

 Achievements 

• Assessed and planned play and learn interventions for 205 children with disabilities (117 Female, 88 Male)

• Built capacity of 200 caregivers in use of play to facilitate learning and social inclusion of children with disabilities from Imvepi, Bidibidi, Rwamwanja refugee settlements

·         Project complimented learning of children with disabilities where a big number was able to learn colour identification, counting, object identification, socialisation with other children and many other skills

• Strengthened capacity of 14 Community outreach workers from Refugee settings in promoting inclusion of children with disabilities through use of play

• Offered disability technical support to 4 Refugee led organizations, now are able to include disability aspects in their implementation plans within the refugee settlements




 

Assessed and planned play and learn interventions for 205 children with disabilities (117 Female, 88 Male) in refugee settlements namely Bidibidi, Imvepi and Rwmwanja

• Build capacity of 200 caregivers in use of play to facilitate learning and social inclusion of children with disabilities from Imvepi, Bidibidi, Rwamwanja refugee settlements

 • Strengthened capacity of 14 Community outreach workers from Refugee settings in promoting inclusion of children with disabilities through use of play 

1.      Parental involvement in play and learn is key in enhance learning of children with disabilities

2.      Involving ECD teachers and schools was noted as a key area that is important to complement learning of children with disabilities

3.      When parent support groups are made custodians of play materials, it helps to increase frequency of learning and play time for children

4.       Well planned play activities compliment academic performance of children
