This project empowers children and youth in Kakuma Refugee Camp through music, storytelling, creative expression, and healing.

We sincerely thank CAMMO and Madam Cathie for their support in making this opportunity possible for AUVD and the youth we serve.

Through portable solar-powered recording studios, young people will have safe spaces to create music, share stories, build skills, and build confidence.

Kakuma Refugee Camp hosts over 200,000 refugees facing displacement and hardship. This initiative creates opportunities for healing, education, and empowerment through art.

We are launching the first pilot program in Kakuma and invite partners, donors, and organizations to join us.

We sincerely thank every individual and organization that donated musical instruments to support our Music Education and Mental Health Program in Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Because of your generosity, we now have guitars, keyboards, and percussion instruments that are actively being used in our weekly sessions.

These instruments are more than just tools; they are pathways to healing, self-expression, hope, and community for refugees rebuilding their lives.

Through music, participants are able to process trauma, regain confidence, express emotions, and connect with others in a safe and supportive environment.

We warmly invite nonprofits, schools, organizations, and partners to join us as we continue expanding this work.

How Music Education Is Healing Young People in Kakuma

For many young people in Kakuma Refugee Camp, music is more than sound. It is a lifeline.

Through AUVD’s Music Education Program, youth are finding safe spaces to:

- Express emotions they do not always have words for

- Process trauma through rhythm, melody, and songwriting

- Build confidence by learning guitar, keyboard, drums, and vocals.

- Connect with others across refugee and host communities.

In 2025, 188 students picked up instruments, many for the first time. Each chord played and each lyric written became a step toward resilience, self-awareness, and hope.

When young people create, they heal. When they perform, they are heard. Music gives them a way to tell their stories on their own terms.

Mental Health & Wellbeing Support at AUVD

We create safe, supportive environments where refugees of all ages can express themselves, recover from trauma, and build emotional resilience through arts. Through music, dance, theatre, painting, and storytelling, participants are encouraged to engage with others, explore emotions, and nurture their psychological wellbeing in culturally meaningful ways. Creative arts activities help people communicate experiences that are often difficult to express in words, provide pathways to reflect on feelings, and support personal growth and emotional connection within community settings. These opportunities foster confidence, strengthen self awareness, and build lasting connections among youth, children, and adults, contributing to healthier and more resilient communities.
