Strengthening Livelihoods for Caregivers of Children with Disabilities This week, Tomorrow Vijana conducted milestone field monitoring visits under the Economic Empowerment Initiative for caregivers of children living with disabilities. The exercise focused on three key areas: 1. Distribution of maize bran to support ongoing livestock feeding initiatives. 2. Monitoring and mentoring of VSLA groups to enhance saving and investment practices. 3. Verification of financial record keeping to ensure accountability and strengthen management capacity among caregiver groups. A highlight of the visit was a success story from one caregiver group of 23 members who received two sows in November. The group reported that each member has now received one piglet to rear at household level, while the remaining piglets and the sows have been retained as group assets to sustain collective income generation. This achievement demonstrates the impact of inclusive livelihood programs in improving economic resilience and self-reliance among families raising children with disabilities.

Last week, Tomorrow Vijana in collaboration with the 3 Stars Rehabilitation Network, jointly conducted two key acivities aimed at enhancing the well-being of children with impairments under our Play and Learn Rehabilitation Program. A child progress assessment was carried out for 20 children from various zones of the Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, focusing on mobility, social interaction, and learning. Each child’s progress was carefully recorded and documented to track development over time. Additionally, 25 caregivers received practical training on how to make low-cost learning materials using locally available resources. The training aimed to make learning more accessible for all children, particularly those with impairments. Caregivers were equipped with the skills, tools, and confidence to support their children’s learning and development both at home and within their communities. At Tomorrow Vijana, we are committed to creating opportunities for every child to play, learn, and grow and together with our partners, we are making it possible.

3Stars Rehabilitation Network, in collaboration with the Tomorrow Vijana team under bright future consortium , conducted a practical training session in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement focused on developing low-cost learning materials for children with disabilities. The training aimed to empower caregivers with creative skills to design inclusive, locally sourced, and affordable educational aids that enhance home-based learning. In addition to the training, the joint team is carrying out monitoring visits to support and strengthen home-based learning practices for children with disabilities. These visits help assess progress, identify learning challenges, and provide tailored guidance to caregivers, ensuring that every child receives equitable learning opportunities in a supportive environment.

Our consortium members 3 stars and Tomorrow Vijana conducted three-days assessment successfully, reaching 32 children. Tomorrow Vijana worked alongside an occupational therapist from 3 Stars to track children's progress in learning, mobility, and behavior. Additionally, two champion caregivers, recently trained in disability support, trained 10 new caregivers of children with disabilities (CWDS). The training covered key topics, including: - *Nutrition:* Proper feeding and appropriate feeding positions for CWDS. - *Understanding Disability:* Causes, symptoms, prevention, and support strategies. Caregivers of children with mobility challenges were also trained in stretching exercises. Some of these children will receive assistive devices such as neck collars and toilet seats to enhance their mobility and comfort.

Through the Bright Future Consortium, funded by Comic Relief and in partnership with Cohere, Tomorrow Vijana has been steadfastly supporting children with disabilities and their caregivers. Over the past six months, the organization has engaged six parent groups of children with disabilities in transformative initiatives to enhance their livelihoods and caregiving capacity. Key achievements include: 1. Comprehensive Training Programs: Caregivers received training in business skills, business planning, and management, equipping them to start and sustain viable income-generating activities. Sessions also focused on agronomic best practices and strategies for managing and overcoming challenges related to their children’s impairments. 2. Innovative Business Ideas: Training sessions facilitated the development of diverse business ideas, including piggery, poultry farming, vegetable cultivation, produce trading, and a revolving fund model. The revolving fund will enable caregivers to borrow at the group level, fostering entrepreneurship while generating small returns for group sustainability. 3. Direct Support for Groups: - One group was provided with the resources and mentorship to establish a piggery project, enabling sustainable income generation. - Another group received revolving fund support to empower individual caregivers to launch or expand personal businesses. 4. Future Plans: The remaining four groups will be supported in the next phase, starting with the 2025 cohort, ensuring a sustainable and phased approach to expanding impact. This partnership not only strengthens the economic resilience of caregivers but also enhances their ability to provide better care and opportunities for their children. By addressing both economic and social barriers, Tomorrow Vijana is fostering a brighter future for children with disabilities and their families.

Our consortium member, Tomorrow Vijana, operating in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, is continually supporting and empowering children with disabilities. In partnership with Cohere, under the Bright Future Consortium, Tomorrow Vijana recently launched a meaningful program for children to bring joy, educational access, and empowerment into their lives. In collaboration with UBONGO Kids, Tomorrow Vijana held an inspiring "Build Brain Roadshow," featuring lively songs, dances, and engaging entertainment such as mascot shows and face drawings . Children received learning materials, including T-shirts, balls, and flash USB drives loaded with UBONGO Kids content. This memorable day was filled with happiness, inclusion, and valuable resources for the children. Throughout the event, we shared essential educational messages with parents, emphasizing the importance of sending every child to school, regardless of disability. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to create equal opportunities for all children and to foster supportive, inclusive communities.
