From Resilience to Growth: Anifa's Story of Hope

In the face of deepening humanitarian challenges and reduced aid in Dzaleka Refugee Camp Malawi, refugee entrepreneurs are working harder than ever to provide for their families.

Anifa, a mother of eight, is one of them. Running a small business, she struggled to keep enough stock as rising costs and limited capital threatened her livelihood.

Through Fountain of Hope Africa's Livelihood program, Anifa accessed the financial support and coaching she needed to expand her inventory, increase her income, and strengthen her business. Today, she is better able to care for her children, meet her customers' needs, and look to the future with renewed confidence.

"This support gave me more than capital, it gave me hope. My business is growing, and so is my family's future." Anifa

As humanitarian assistance declines, investing in refugee entrepreneurs is helping families build resilience, restore dignity, and build self-reliance.

Standing with Women Entrepreneurs in Challenging Times

This week, the Fountain of Hope Africa team RDC is visiting women-owned small businesses across underserved neighborhoods in Bukavu, South Kivu, providing mentorship and business coaching to help entrepreneurs navigate one of the most challenging periods the region has faced.

As ongoing conflict and the Ebola outbreak continue to disrupt supply chains, reduce purchasing power, and limit market access, these resilient women are refusing to give up. Their small businesses are more than sources of income—they are lifelines that put food on the table, keep children in school, and strengthen the resilience of entire communities.

Through continuous mentorship and tailored business support, we are helping women adapt, rebuild, and grow despite the crisis. When a woman-owned business succeeds, families become more secure, local markets recover, and communities move one step closer to lasting stability.

Last week, we were honored to welcome a team from our partner Cohere to Fountain of Hope Africa’s Malawi site in Dzaleka Refugee Camp. The visit highlighted how locally designed, community-led solutions are addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing refugees and host communities—from quality education and livelihood opportunities to resilience and self-reliance.

Seeing children learning, women and young entrepreneurs growing their businesses, and communities leading their own development reaffirmed a simple truth: the people closest to the challenges are often closest to the solutions.

Thank you, Cohere , for your visit and for believing in local leadership.

No child should face displacement alone

Across Eastern D.R.Congo, the worsening humanitarian crisis has left thousands of children separated from their families. Unaccompanied and separated children are among the most vulnerable, carrying the trauma of violence, loss, and the uncertainty of not knowing where—or if—they will see their loved ones again.

As conflict continues to displace more families and communities, these children face higher risks of abuse, exploitation, trafficking, neglect, and other forms of violence. Without the protection of a caring adult, many are forced to navigate unimaginable challenges alone while their hopes for safety and a normal childhood grow more fragile each day.

Every child deserves protection, care, and the chance to heal. Collective efforts can help restore hope by investing in holistic solutions that match education with livelihoods, mental health support, child and safe spaces where children can recover, learn, and rebuild their futures.

A new week, a proud progress!

We are excited to celebrate our 38 Form 2 students in Dzaleka Refugee Camp, who successfully completed their Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) examinations this month.

At a time when funding cuts and the reduction of humanitarian services continue to threaten education for displaced children, this is a powerful reminder that investing in quality education gives young people hope and opportunities for a brighter future.

We are proud of their resilience and wish them every success in the next chapter of their educational journey!

Leadership Rooted in Hope, Service, and Courage

Before the official inauguration, Fountain of Hope Africa's Founder and Executive Director, Marcel Cirhuza, had the privilege of visiting the Obama Presidential Center, a powerful space that reflects the values of service, hope, and transformative leadership.

Walking through the center was a reminder that courageous leadership is not about power, but about lifting others, building bridges, and inspiring people to believe in a better future. President Barack Obama's legacy of humility, integrity, inclusion, resilience, and unwavering commitment to humanity continues to inspire leaders across the world.

As someone who has experienced displacement and now works to empower vulnerable communities, Marcel was deeply moved by the vision that ordinary people can create extraordinary change when they lead with purpose, compassion, and hope.

Today, on the Day of the African Child, we join the continent in calling for universal access to water, sanitation, and hygiene for every child in Africa.

For millions of children, especially those living in displacement sites, refugee camps and conflict-affected communities, access to safe water and sanitation remains a daily challenge. No child should have to miss school, risk illness, or lose their dignity because of a lack of clean water and hygiene facilities.

At Fountain of Hope Africa, we believe that access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right and a foundation for health, education, protection, and opportunity.

As we celebrate the resilience and potential of Africa's children, let us recommit to ensuring that no child, including those forced to flee their homes, is left behind.

Transforming Learning Through Technology in Dzaleka Refugee Camp

We were honored to welcome the One Billion team to Fountain of Hope Africa’s education centers at Dzaleka Refugee Camp, Malawi, where they witnessed how digital learning is transforming the educational journey of refugee and host community children.

Implemented in partnership with Imagine Worldwide, and powered by One Billion’s innovative learning software, our tablet-based education program is helping children develop foundational literacy and numeracy skills through engaging, interactive, and self-paced learning. In a context where access to quality education remains a major challenge, technology is helping bridge learning gaps and unlock new opportunities for children to thrive.

The visit provided an opportunity to hear directly from learners, teachers, and community members about the positive impact the program is having on children's confidence, academic performance, and enthusiasm for learning.

💔 An Ignored Reality too many Families are facing in Eastern DRC

While touring Karisimbi municipality in Goma, eastern DRC, our Field Officer Francine made a heartbreaking discovery while identifying forcibly displaced families for enrollment into our Livelihood and Economic Empowerment Program.
Inside an old building destroyed by bombs shells, she found several displaced families living in extreme distress and high-risk conditions. Among them was a widowed mother caring for six children, including a 7-year-old who was shot in the leg months ago. Since the injury, he has never received proper medical attention only a few painkillers and antibiotics. The child continues to endure unimaginable pain, while the entire family struggles missing almost everything.
Sadly, this is not an isolated case; countless families in affected zones are facing similar realities as the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen.
Stand with us to help the most vulnerable families access urgent services.

Bringing Hope and Livelihood Support to Displaced Families.

This week, Program Manager, Fanny, is on the ground in Kasheke, near Bukavu in Eastern DRC, providing livelihood support to forcibly displaced families with children under five years old who continue to face the devastating impacts of conflict and the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

As violence and health emergencies continue to disrupt lives across the region, many families are struggling to meet their most basic needs. Women and young children remain among the most vulnerable, facing food insecurity, loss of income, and limited access to opportunities that can help them rebuild their lives.

Through our livelihood program, families are receiving practical support to strengthen their resilience, restore their sources of income, and improve their ability to care for their children with dignity and hope.

From Struggle to Success

Evelyn, a single mother from Lillambwe Village near Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi, she is living proof of what is possible when women are given the opportunity to succeed.

Over the past three years, through Fountain of Hope Africa’s Livelihood and Economic Empowerment Program, Evelyn received business skills training, financial support, and mentorship. Today, she has grown a successful farming business that combines crop production and livestock farming, generating a sustainable income for her family.

Her earnings now enable her to care for her two children, pay school their fees, and meet her household needs. One of her most remarkable achievements has been building her own house—a dream that once seemed out of reach.

Courage in crisis time!

Yesterday, Fountain of Hope Africa started the week with hope and new beginnings as we provided small business grants to a new group of young women entrepreneurs from Karisimbi, Goma after successfully completing their business skills training.

At a time when communities in Eastern DRC continue to face worsening humanitarian challenges caused by ongoing conflict, displacement, economic hardship, and the impact of Ebola, many women are struggling daily to provide for their families and rebuild their lives.

These small grants represent more than financial support — they are an opportunity for these young women to restore dignity, create sustainable livelihoods, support their children, and contribute positively to their communities. Through their businesses, they are becoming part of the resilience and recovery that Eastern DRC urgently needs.

The needs remain immense, and many more families are still waiting for opportunities to rebuild their futures with dignity.

They listened to families and mothers who lost everything, children who witnessed unimaginable violence, and families struggling to rebuild amid despair. Education remains the Strongest Weapon Against Despair In South Kivu, where conflict has shattered communities and displaced families, education remains a distant dream for millions. Across the DRC, more than 1.6 millions children are out of school, many forced to flee violence, abandon their homes, or work to help their families survive. At FOH we strongly believe that every child deserves the chance to learn, dream, and rebuild. Through our collaboration with local schools in Panzi, we are helping children who were once left behind return to classrooms, providing learning materials, psychosocial support, and safe learning spaces for those most affected by war. Each child who regains access to education represents a victory for hope and peace. These classrooms are not just places of learning they are beacons of resilience, hope and courage where futures are being rewritten

Last week during an intensive field trip, FOH Site Coordinator Marie in Goma met 35 displaced women with over 60 children including newborns—now sheltering in a bomb-damaged classroom after the IDP camp where they were living after fleeing their villages due to the deadly violence was demolished. With tears in their eyes and a hopeless voice, they testified that husbands, fathers were either killed in war or are missing. With no food, water, or protection from rain, 80% of the children are sick with fever, diarrhea, or respiratory infections, while the near by health centers visited by Marie for an emergency treatment lack supplies. This heartbreaking reality reflects the worsening crisis in Eastern DRC. We urgently call for action. Join us in bringing relief and dignity to these families.

The situation in Eastern DRC is deteriorating at an alarming rate! This part of DRC is facing one of the world’s most devastating and protracted humanitarian crises, and the situation is worsening daily. Today, hunger is the deadliest threat. According to humanitarian assessments, malnutrition rates among children under five in conflict-affected areas exceed 45%, with pregnant and nursing women among the most severely impacted. Children are not only starving, they are also dying from preventable diseases. Skin infections, cholera, and malaria are spreading rapidly, and most local health facilities have no medical supplies left. While international NGOs and donors including USAID have withdrawn or drastically reduced funding, local organizations like Fountain of Hope remain on the frontline, striving to save lives. But resources are scarce, and the needs are overwhelming. This is not just another crisis; it is a call to global solidarity.

Humanitarian Emergency in Eastern DRC – Lives Are at Risk In North and South Kivu, the war has shattered every aspect of life. Entire villages have been burned, over 10 thousands people killed since January this year without counting those who are dying by hunger, cholera and other untreated diseases. Families are fleeing with nothing. Homes, schools, and health facilities have been bombed into ruins. What remains is hunger, fear, trauma and loss. Millions especially children and women are in critical danger. - Over 2 million children are suffering from acute malnutrition. - Communities have no access to clean water or basic healthcare. - Pregnant and nursing mothersare dying from preventable conditions due to lack of medical care. - Displaced families sleep in the open, vulnerable to disease, violence, and exploitation. - A staggering number of unaccompanied children have lost their entire families and are left alone, exposed, and unprotected. Meanwhile, many international NGOs have closed or withdrawn including USAIDleaving massive gaps in humanitarian coverage. The needs are growing far beyond what we can respond to, and local organizations like ours are underfunded and overwhelmed but still standing. At Fountain Of Hope Africa, we have refused to turn away despite our limited resources . We are actively: - Distributing emergency food and and nonfood items including water purification products - Providing medical transport and hospital bill support for mothers and children - Delivering baby food and hygiene kits - Providing tarpaulin for temporary shelters - Offering psychosocial support to survivors of violence and trauma We extend our heartfelt thanks to our partners Segal Family Foundation, Cohere, MortensenFamilyFoundation, and others whose solidarity and support on the ground are making our life-saving work possible. But the needs are. he scale of the crisis demands urgent global solidarity * Every day without action costs lives. * Every donation helps deliver food, healthcare, shelter, water, dignity and save lives * Every share raises awareness. We are calling on donors, individuals and the global community to act now. Help us save lives and restore hope in the heart of this emergency.

In the conflict-affected zones of North and South Kivu in the eastern of DRC where the ongoing conflict continues to displace thousands, pregnant women and mothers with newborns are among the most vulnerable, facing severe health risks due to limited access to medical care. This week in Goma, Eastern DRC, our dedicated Site Coordinator Marie Kiriza spent her days in the field reaching some of the most vulnerable pregnant women and unaccompanied children forcibly displaced by ongoing conflict. Amid deep uncertainty marked by fear, hunger, and emotional trauma, Marie offered more than services; she offered presence, compassion, and dignity. From listening to the quiet fears of expectant mothers to helping unaccompanied children access care and support, Marie’s work was a lifeline in a place where hope often feels out of reach. Her hands delivered essential items, but her heart delivered something deeper reminding each person that they are not forgotten. This was a special week, one that touched lives at their most fragile point. In the heart of crisis, Marie carried the mission of Fountain of Hope forward: to show up, to care, and to restore dignity where it's needed most. If you believe in standing with those who’ve lost everything, now is the time to act. Support our work in Goma by helping us reach more pregnant women, unaccompanied children, mothers with newborn babies, and families in desperate need. Every contribution helps us deliver food, shelter, medical care, and most importantly hope. We are making it happen because we are not alone, it was made possible through the unwavering support of our partners Cohere and Segal Family Foundation.

They spent a joyful day with us, starting off with an engaging meeting with our core team to discuss about a potential collaboration for mental health services to refugee students at Dzaleka Malawi. The excitement continued with some amazing activities for our 8 and upper grades students, followed by a fun-filled game session featuring sports, team-building activities, and communication games. Interested individuals and organizations are welvome to join us like MATCH Foundation MW in celebrating these meaningful connections!

Access to reliable energy remains a significant challenge for many vulnerable communities, including those at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Malawi. Forcibly displaced students often face limited access to electricity, which hinders their ability to study, read, and prepare for exams after dark. This lack of energy not only affects their education but also impacts social services and overall well-being. At our school at Dzaleka refugee camp Malawi, solar lamps are helping to bridge this gap. These lamps provide students with the light they need to study at home, enabling them to enhance their reading skills, prepare their materials, and improve their academic performance. By ensuring that students have the resources to continue their education, we are empowering them to build a brighter future. Together, we can make a difference. Your support helps us provide more solar lamps and essential resources, creating opportunities for these resilient students to succeed. Let’s illuminate the path to education and progress for all.
