STRENGTHENING THE PARENT-CHILD BOND THROUGH QUALITY EDUCATIONAL CONTENT.

As part of our SEL programme, we brought parents together for a session of sharing and learning around Ubongo educational content videos made specially for parents and caregivers.
These resources help families support their children's learning and emotional wellbeing at home.

When parents get involved in positive, playful parenting, they become key players in their children's social and emotional growth.
Thank you to Ubongo for these tools that make learning fun for the whole family.

When SEL steps out of the centre and meets children where they live.

We carried out a community outreach to bring our services to refugee children who live a little further from our centre and cannot always attend our Social Emotional Learning sessions regularly.

The programme included captivating stories, lively songs and dances, as well as moments of comedy that made eyes shine and laughter burst out.

Because distance should not be a barrier to learning, joy, and emotional wellbeing. Every child deserves to feel included, heard, and valued.

We go to them. We walk alongside them. We build bridges, wherever they are.

A visit that strengthens ties and nurtures our shared vision.

We had the honour and pleasure of welcoming a delegation from our partner Cohere to the HSD centre, composed of Mr. Kasi Bisimwa, Ms. Elizabeth NGUNGI, and Ms. Basika Jenny.

They came to learn about the current situation of HSD, and were able to see our activities on the ground, engage with the children in our SEL programme, and get a firsthand understanding of the daily realities of our centre in Kakuma.

These direct exchanges helped strengthen mutual understanding, share our future perspectives, and reaffirm the importance of a partnership built on trust and listening.

We are grateful to Cohere for their commitment to us, and for their willingness to see, understand, and support the work we do with the refugee community.

Today, we honor the resilience, courage, and dreams of the Burundian refugee children participating in our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program at Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya.

But today, we are thinking especially of the Congolese refugee children who take part in our activities at Human Shine Dreams, here in Kakuma. Far from their homeland, they carry within them the history, culture, and resilience of a great people.

Through our SEL sessions, we support them as they grow, dream, and rediscover their light. Because a refugee child is still a child, with rights, dreams, and dignity.

Today, we honour their quiet strength, their smiles despite everything, and their ability to rebuild elsewhere.

When a viral game becomes a tool for social-emotional learning.

Our children from the SEL programme took on the water bottle challenge: spin it, land it, and make it... stand up. A simple game, but one that requires concentration, patience, and perseverance.

Behind the laughter and cheers, there is a real life lesson: learning to try again after failure, controlling one's movements and emotions, and celebrating small victories together.

Each child found their own technique. Some succeeded on the first try, others after several attempts. All learned to manage frustration and savour success.
That is how SEL turns a trending game into a moment of collective growth.

After a SEL session rich in emotions and learning, our children enjoyed a moment of refreshment.

Yesterday, we celebrated the Day of the African Child with our refugee children at HSD.

It was a day filled with smiles, songs, dances, and sharing. Together, we honoured childhood, resilience, and the hope that shines in the eyes of our little ones.

We would like to warmly thank everyone who supports us, near or far, in our activities with refugee children in Kakuma. Your generosity, your time, and your trust allow us to offer these children moments of joy and dignity.

A big thank you also to the children and their parents for their trust and their commitment to our side.

Every shared smile is a victory. And we will continue to build bridges, together.

Alphonsine came to the HSD centre at just 6 months old,

She used to come along simply to accompany her brothers. Quietly, Just watching.

Today, she stands in front of older children; She sings, She leads, She shines.

This is the magic of SEL: a child growing in confidence, surrounded by kindness and positive role models.

As part of the Building Bridge Project (BBP), we invited the parents of 15 new children who joined our SEL programme last week for a dedicated discussion.

Together, we talked about the essential role of parents in their children's emotional wellbeing and learning.

Because change also starts at home, and parents are the first companions of resilience.

These moments of listening and sharing strengthen our shared commitment.

Today, as part of our Building Bridge Project (BBP)/SEL programme, we carried out a routine home visit in the community.

As soon as we entered the target area, we were warmly welcomed by a large number of children, eager and smiling.

These moments of direct connection with families and children remind us why we do this work.

Trust is built not only in our classrooms, but also on the small dirt paths, in front of homes, and in the heart of the neighbourhoods.

Thank you to the children and their parents for this warm welcome. It is for them, and with them, that we continue to move forward.

Thanks to the Building Bridge Project (BBP) , we have just launched a brand new programme: basic computer training for young refugees aged 12 to 17 who already take part in our SEL sessions.

The goal is simple: to give them basic digital skills so they can better navigate an increasingly connected world. Mouse, keyboard, word processing, online searches... They learn step by step, with curiosity and determination.

These young people are growing up in an environment where access to technology is very limited.

Yet their desire to learn is huge. Today, they are laying the first foundations of a future where they can study, work and communicate differently.

When the search for water replaces the journey to school

During a community visit in Kakuma Refugee Camp, we met Joyeuse and her younger brother, both participants in the Building Bridges Project.

Under the scorching sun, they were collecting drops of water from a leaking pipe. Due to water scarcity, they missed school that day to help their family secure water for household use. Their story reflects the daily challenges many refugee children face.

Together, we can continue building bridges toward a future where every child has access to education, dignity, and opportunity.

In this video, refugee children aged 4 to 8 take part in a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) session at the HSD centre in Kakuma.

Through games, songs, and group activities, they learn to recognise their emotions, cooperate with others, and build their self-confidence.

No classrooms.

This week at the HSD centre, Ishimwe and his friends chose to play with discarded tyres running, laughing, and inventing games with almost nothing.

Watching them took me back to my own childhood. No fancy toys, just imagination and joy.

These children don't wait for perfect conditions to be happy. They create happiness with what they have. And that is a powerful lesson for all of us.

During this session, music and dance became a remedy after a long school day.

We started with a lively activity: music and dance.

Our facilitators, Virginia and Arega, brought such warmth that the children, tired after several hours sitting in class, quickly forgot their fatigue.

They arrived straight from school, feeling a bit worn out. But from the very first notes, their smiles returned. They danced with their facilitators, released the stress of the day, and regained their energy and joy.

This is also what socio-emotional learning is about: learning to welcome one's emotions, release tension, and reconnect with others through movement and rhythm.

We left our centre to meet the children where they live not at our centre this time, but in their usual play areas, in their own community. Away from the centre, we offered them a session full of games, dancing and fun activities.

No formal learning. Just refugee children running, laughing and having fun together. Children who, for one afternoon, forgot their status and simply became children.

These moments strengthen our bond with them. Because socio-emotional learning happens everywhere, in every shared smile.

Learning their rights, understanding their duties: growing as responsible citizens.

As part of our SEL sessions (Building Bridge Project), we discussed an essential topic with the children: their rights and their responsibilities. Each child learned that they have the right to be protected, to go to school, to receive healthcare, and to express themselves freely. They also understood that every right comes with a duty: to respect others, to help at home, and to take part in their community life.

These moments of dialogue strengthen their confidence, self-esteem, and sense of belonging. Raising informed citizens is also about preparing a fairer and more united future.

We are proud to see our little ones grow with these values.

As part of the Building Bridge Project (BBP) , we organised a unique session of expression and storytelling with our refugee children in Kakuma. Each child told a story in their mother tongue whether Arabic, Kibembe, Kiganda, Oromo, Somali, Kifuliru, Kinyarwanda or Swahili.

Then, another child from a different tribe or country retold the story and translated it into the common language of the camp: Swahili.

This exercise in listening and translation allowed the children to discover the richness of each other's cultures, while building a true team spirit. Beyond the words, bridges of friendship and understanding were woven between them.

We are proud to see this generation growing up, making diversity a strength and sharing a second nature.

We paid a surprise visit to Kasore, Miriam, Gentille, Vinqueur, and Emi, refugee children who take part in our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program during their lunch break at school in Kakuma. Their joy at seeing us outside of our center was so sincere and heartwarming!

These precious moments remind us that the bonds built through our sessions go beyond any setting.

Seeing these children smile and thrive at school too is our greatest reward.

In the heart of our Building Bridge Project (BBP) sessions, children are not just building objects. They are building their ability to imagine, to persevere, and to share. These cardboard houses and vehicles reflect their inner world, their dreams, and their incredible potential.

Encouraging their creativity also means strengthening their self-confidence and giving them tools to grow. Thank you to these little builders for these meaningful masterpieces.
