Project Name: Enhancing Children Education Program

Objectives:

The program aims to improve access to quality education for children aged 4-8 by equipping parents, teachers, and community leaders with social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies. It seeks to foster collaboration among stakeholders to remove barriers to education.

Key Activities:

We provide a four-month training for parents and caregivers focused on SEL, covering positive reinforcement, emotional management, conflict resolution, and play-based learning activities. After training, participants form parenting groups to support children's development and enhance SEL skills among other caregivers. Teachers receive mentoring to integrate SEL into classroom activities, creating a nurturing learning environment. Additionally, we engage community leaders through dialogues to clarify their roles in child development. By incorporating active play and recreational activities, we help children express and manage their emotions while developing social awareness, thereby promoting holistic growth and learning.

we successfully formed four parenting groups comprising 78 parents across two cohorts, operational in various locations within Kakuma, including Kakuma 2 (zone 1, blocks 12 and 1) and Kakuma 3 (zone 1, block 01). These groups collaborate with nearby primary and pre-schools to enhance educational opportunities.

Their key activities include:

Community Plays: Organizing sessions that foster social interaction and emotional development among children.

Community Sensitization: Raising awareness about the importance of social-emotional learning (SEL) for families.

School Visits: Engaging with local schools (Gambela, Fuji, Horseed, Polota Primaries, Sorat, and Songot Preschools) to promote collaboration and share SEL practices.

Group Discussions: Facilitating discussions among parents to reinforce SEL learning and provide support.

Income Generation Activities: Developing initiatives that ensure the sustainability of their efforts.

The program has positively impacted 40 teachers from different schools, including facilitators from grassroots organizations (RLOs), by equipping them with valuable SEL strategies to improve their teaching methodologies and foster nurturing environments. Additionally, we engaged 40 community leaders through meetings and dialogues to strengthen their involvement in children's education.

We organized a joint event with SIR, FAULU, and KI4BLI, bringing together 80 community stakeholders to raise awareness about their roles in the education of children in Kakuma and Kalobeyei. To date, the project has reached 169 children, enhancing their academic engagement and social dynamics.

We have learned that collaborating with community members is essential for achieving project objectives, particularly when addressing the specific challenges they face. Engaging community members in the design process significantly enhances the project's relevance and effectiveness. Additionally, our partnerships with other grassroots organizations (RLOs) have proven invaluable; sharing experiences fosters resilience and courage in overcoming challenges.

Support from COHERE through capacity-strengthening sessions—covering project management, data management, and organizational sustainability—has played a critical role in enhancing our project management skills and contributing to our overall organizational growth.

We have established strong partnerships with RLOs such as SIR, FAULU, AP, and KI4BLI. Through mutual cooperation, we have shared operational updates and explored ways to support one another, reinforcing our collective impact. This collaboration has strengthened the relationship between community members and our organization, deepening their understanding of KVC's mission and vision as a grassroots organization committed to community development.

Finally, our efforts have attracted interest from NGOs, leading to visits to our organization. These engagements allow us to discuss potential areas of collaboration and how we can enhance their services, further reinforcing our commitment to community empowerment and education.
