IMPROVING ECD OUTCOMES FOR CHILDREN 0-5 YEARS IN REFUGEE HOSTING DISTRICTS IN UGANDA
Under the Small Grants mechanism facilitated by the ACE Policy Research Institute and technically supported by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, WARDI Uganda has successfully executed a targeted child protection intervention. Funded through the generosity of the Hilton Foundation, this strategic initiative directly reached 90 refugee parents, enrolling them in comprehensive positive parenting sessions. The curriculum was specifically designed to build psychosocial resilience, introduce non-violent disciplinary methods, and establish foundational child safety frameworks within displaced households. By empowering these caregivers, the project aimed to create a protective buffer around vulnerable children who are currently navigating the profound traumas of forced displacement, socio-economic marginalization, and fractured community support systems.

Our team, alongside our education and livelihood partners, participated in a field experience learning visit yesterday. The event was hosted by BRAC Uganda to showcase their impactful project models and methodologies.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity for WARDI and its partners to observe BRAC's successful interventions first-hand, engage with project beneficiaries, and exchange knowledge on best practices in the community development sector. This collaborative learning initiative is a crucial step in strengthening our programs and fostering greater synergy among key actors in Uganda's development landscape.
We extend our sincere gratitude to BRAC Uganda for their hospitality and transparency in sharing their experiences.

Due to lack of Funding there is 4 ECD centre that has been left not operating, in the refugee settlement of Imvepi Refugee camp, as a refugee led organisation, we feel ownership of the centres. together with the refugee leaders, caregivers, government and the entire refugee community. we develop a community funding project, where by we mobilise the community to support the Centres with cash contribution, human resource, and play materials. today we have conducted feedback meeting with the Refugee welfare councils RWCs to find out some impressing challenges affecting the ECD centres in the settlement, the challenges we identified are limited play materials, teaching materials and cleaning tools, the school management committees are lacking knowledge and skills of how they can run some programmes, fundraising and Advocacy programmes at the centres. hence requesting for capacity building. there is need of raising awareness and sensitisation on Early learning and importance of sending children 3-8 years early to school. AS a refugee led organisation we are requesting for more support to this programme to enable the refugee children access better education and play programmes at the settlement.

Today we have distributed sisal ropes to 33 PSN (person with special need) the aim of supporting the PSN with sisal ropes is to help them use it for temporary shelter construction. in imvepi refugee settlement, most families used grass houses, and it is very important to support them with sisal ropes, so we are calling for more support from friends, partners and donors to support this idea. your little contribution can change life in our refugee community of imvepi.

Together we stand to make our children have access to quality education, yesterday we conducted community meeting at Supiri ECD centre. the aim of this meeting is to find out some gaps that hinders the community in supporting there own ECD centre. the challenges that affect the parents are, limited knowledge, skills and capacity to manage the ECD centres, limited resource at the centres e.g. play materials, lesson frame work, limited teaching materials and lack of funds to support the caregivers. the recommendation is that, there is need for capacity building training to the school management committee, child protection committee, and parents support group in other for them to have knowledge and skills for school management. there is need of locating some funds to facilitate the caregivers. and also there is need of supporting the ECD centres with teaching materials, like pens, counter books for lesson planing, learning frame work, marker pens, flip chart, and chocks. if we could be able to mobilise this resource we can make the ECD centres in imvepi refugee settlement better and conducive for learning

The Story of Stephen Bida A Local Actor
Stephen Bida, is a director of women Action for Rural Development Initiative commonly known as WARDI Uganda a refugee led organization, Stephen is a south Sudanese refugee living in Imvepi refugee settlement in Uganda when Stephen Bida learned that children in his community were no longer attending ECD centers due to lack of funding, he knew he had to act. The centers, once supported by an international NGO, but due to funding gaps the center had been abandoned when the funding dried up, leaving young children without access to critical early learning opportunities.
Undeterred, Stephen sprang into action. He began mobilizing the community, going door-to-doo, public gathering to spread awareness about the importance of ECD and the consequences of leaving children behind. His message resonated - parents and caregivers were eager to support the centers, but many felt powerless to do so on their own.
Stephen's solution was to organize the community into a collective effort. He encouraged families to contribute whatever they could afford - whether money, time, or supplies - to revive the ECD centers. The response was overwhelming. Neighbors banded together, pooling their resources to pay caregivers, repair facilities, and stock classrooms with learning materials.
As the community-supported ECD centers sprang back to life, the impact was immediate and profound. Children who had fallen behind academically began to thrive, catching up quickly thanks to the nurturing, stimulating environment. Parents reported that their children were more confident, curious, and eager to learn.
"Before the ECD center reopened, my child was always at home, not learning anything," said Monica Bako. "Now he comes back full of energy, singing songs and telling me all the new things he discovered that day. I'm so grateful to have this opportunity for him."
Stephen's has demonstrates the power of community-led initiatives to fill critical gaps in early childhood development. By mobilizing families to contribute what they can, the ECD centers are able to operate sustainably, without relying on unpredictable external funding.
So Stephen Bida is calling your support, Stephen's model can be replicated in refugee communities around the world, ensuring that no child is left behind. Your donation today can help provide young children in Imvepi refugee settlement in Uganda with the strong foundation they need to succeed in school and in life, even in the face of adversity.
