After more than seven years of continuous advocacy for fair, transparent, and efficient Refugee Status Determination (RSD) processes for Eritrean asylum seekers, efforts paid off in 2023. OPM and UNHCR introduced Accelerated RSD Interviews, where the Refugee Eligibility Committee (REC) conducted interviews and made immediate decisions. The outcome was unprecedented and extraordinary. In less than two months, around 13,000 asylum seekers were interviewed, and 95% were granted refugee status. This was a remarkable achievement with no parallel.
