Driving the Transition to Clean Cooking

On 7 July 2026, Live in Green participated in the SOLCO Multi-Stakeholder Review Meeting at AYAN Kyaka II, organized by AYAN and Last Mile Climate. We showcased our CREEC-certified Moto Core Stove, which uses micro-gasification technology to burn biomass briquettes and pellets efficiently, meeting international clean cooking standards. We also exhibited our smokeless carbonized briquettes and Eco-Lighters, making clean cooking faster, easier, and more sustainable.

Last week (15–19 June 2026), Live in Green spent a week with our partner Cohere in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement. No reports, document reviews, or compliance checklists, just honest conversations, field visits, and learning together. We discussed real challenges facing refugee-led organizations, the impact of funding decline, and opportunities for sustainable growth. Michael and Jenny visited our Energy Hub, recycling site, tree nursery, and CSA farm. Grateful for partners who value trust, relationships, and genuine impact over paperwork.

LIVE IN GREEN continues promoting environmental conservation in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement through agroforestry, restoration, and climate-smart agriculture. Our expanded nursery is nurturing nearly 20,000 fruit tree seedlings including mangoes, jackfruits, avocados, and pawpaw, with 70% already booked. This work restores the environment while creating green jobs for refugees and host communities. Thanks to Cohere for supporting this impact.

On 28th April, Live in Green hosted the Global Platform for Action (GPA) team in Kyaka II. We showcased how we turn waste into clean briquettes and compost, and introduced our clean cooking solutions, including the Moto Core Stove for cooking, lighting, and charging. The team also visited our tree nursery. We highlighted key challenges like high production costs and limited financing. The insights shared will help shape future interventions.

Live in Green continues to champion environmental conservation in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement by adding more tree seedlings to Bukere Secondary School. This follows the planting of 300 fruit and non-fruit trees on 24 March 2026 with stakeholders, including Centenary Bank. Seedlings were collected from our Bukere Zone nursery by the Environmental Club led by Mr. Mark Musinguzi. Together, we grow a greener future.

Live in Green has launched the transformation of the Bukere Zone Dumpsite in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement.

Next: fencing and compartmentalization for dumping, sorting, and processing. Organic, plastic, glass, and polythene waste will each have dedicated units.

This initiative turns waste into value, creating green jobs and income for refugees and host communities while protecting the environment.

On 23rd March, Live in Green, with OPM Kyaka II, mobilized Bukere Trading Centre for a major waste collection drive. Local businesses supported by providing trucks & Tuk-tuk to transport waste to the Live in Green-managed dumpsite.

The community agreed to make this a monthly activity and introduce a polluter fee for sustainability. This initiative strengthened unity, collaboration, and collective action for a cleaner, healthier Kyaka II.

Live in Green, in partnership with Centenary Bank, conducted a tree planting activity at Bukere Secondary School on 24th March 2026 under the Restoration of Degraded Land project. The event was honored by Settlement Commandant Mr. Daniel Kisaamo and Assistant Mr. Stephen Bogere, alongside partners including Hodari, AYAN, RESDA, YAWORA, Emap Foundation, and GIVE. Students and staff planted Mangoes, Pine, Calliandra, and Bardum trees, promoting climate resilience and sustainability.

The rising cost of charcoal and firewood in Uganda is making it harder for families to cook affordably.

LIVE IN GREEN is committed to providing clean, affordable cooking solutions. Transporting our products to distant customers was a challenge, but thanks to J.A.C Trust, we now have a truck to reach more communities.

LIVE IN GREEN celebrates graduating from U-Learn Uganda's AAP Program! We were among only six organizations selected nationwide for the 2025 Cohort.

On 5 March 2026, Executive Director Solomon Bhaghabhonerano, Walter, and Patrick Kasasa represented us at the graduation. Thank you to mentors Bruno Sserunkuma and Matthew Okot for their support.

This 8-month training strengthens our commitment to accountability and better service for communities in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement and beyond.

Following our assignment to manage waste in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, our team conducted a technical assessment at Bukere Dumpsite together with the OPM, represented by WASH sector lead and Assistant Settlement Commandant Mr. Stephen Bogere.

This responsibility reflects growing trust in Refugee-Led Organizations to lead essential services and environmental stewardship. We remain committed to creating cleaner, safer, and more sustainable communities.

Live in Green at Sankalp Africa Summit 2026

Live in Green is proud to be represented by our Founder & Executive Director, Solomon Bhaghabhonerano, at the 13th Sankalp Africa Summit – South-South Rising, taking place on 25–26 February 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya. We are honored to join the Entrepreneur Showcase with Ashden, highlighting refugee-led, community-driven clean energy and circular economy solutions advancing inclusive climate action across Africa.

At Live in Green, every type of waste is a resource.

After sorting plastics, glass, polythene, and other non-organic materials, the remaining decomposed organic waste is processed into compost manure. Farmers in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement and surrounding communities are using this compost to rejuvenate soils and improve crop productivity.

By turning waste into opportunity, we support sustainable agriculture, strengthen local livelihoods, and promote a circular economy in refugee and host communities.

On 26 January 2026, we had the pleasure of hosting delegates from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) and the National Renewable Energy Platform (NREP) at our Energy Centre in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement.

The visit enabled constructive discussions on how Live in Green can be supported by MEMD to enhance the scalability and sustainability of our clean energy and clean cooking initiatives serving refugee and host communities.

We are encouraged by the engagement and insights shared and remain hopeful that this dialogue will lead to meaningful partnerships and positive outcomes for inclusive energy access.

Live in Green is committed to advancing a green circular economy in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement. The video shows plastic bottles, one of the main waste streams, being transported to recycling companies in Kampala for value addition. Our goal is to start recycling plastics within Kyaka II to empower refugee and host communities and create green jobs. With a plastic shredder already acquired, we are mobilizing resources for a moulding machine. We thank Ashden, J.A.C Trust, Cohere, and CFLI and welcome new partners to join us.

Small food vendors roasting meat, maize, and cassava often spend UGX 7,000–30,000 daily on charcoal, a major expense.

Live in Green’s energy-saving briquette stove changes this. In a live demo with a Kyaka II meat roaster, fuel costs dropped from UGX 8,000 (charcoal) to under UGX 3,000 (briquettes) for the same amount of meat.

Over 20 vendors have already adopted the stove, cutting costs and boosting profits.

On 27th November 2025, we made our first major sale as buyers came directly to our garden to purchase fresh cabbages

This support is strengthening our Income Generating Activities (IGAs) and helping us build sustainable livelihoods for refugee and host community families.

On 29th October 2025, Live in Green successfully convened the Basecamp on Clean Cooking Solutions Market Activation in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement. Generously supported by the Western Union Foundation through the Watson Institute, and our donors Cohere and Ashden, the event united OPM, UNHCR, district government, refugee leaders, charcoal sellers, and community members.

The day featured insightful speeches and live demonstrations of our efficient briquettes and air-forced cook-stoves. The momentum was incredible, culminating in tangible commitments and on-the-spot acquisitions by the community!

This is just the beginning. Together, we are igniting a sustainable future, one clean cook-stove at a time.
