From Dreams to Reality: The Inspirational Journey of Homaira Zamiri
Meet Homaira, a shining example of how resilience and the power of education can transform lives. From being forced to leave her homeland, enduring the uncertainty of living in transit, and overcoming numerous barriers to education, Homaira has shown remarkable strength and determination.
Her journey from the Transitional Year Programme Program at the University of Toronto to now preparing for a bachelor's degree is not just a story - it's a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who refuse to let circumstances define their future. ????
As a voice in the "Leading with Lived Experiences: Refugee Voices Shaping Higher Education's Future" project, Homaira's powerful graduation speech underscores the urgent need to make education accessible to everyone, no matter where they come from.

We are incredibly proud of OUR’s Director, Amna Shah, for sharing her powerful piece on navigating higher education as a refugee in Canada. Her lived experiences shed light on the critical barriers faced by newcomers with forcibly displaced/refugee backgrounds and underscore the need for greater support and inclusivity in Canadian universities.
At OUR, we have consistently led the charge in addressing higher education access barriers for refugees across Asia, Africa, North America, the UK, and beyond. This blog highlights the urgent need for Canadian universities to actively support and recruit refugee students and newcomers, ensuring they have the opportunities and resources to thrive.

In collaboration with the Syrian Canadian Foundation, OUR hosted the workshop titled “Empowering Refugee Voices & Representation in Democratic Engagement” at the DemocracyXChange Summit in Toronto!
During the session, we delved into crucial topics such as the challenges faced by newcomers & refugees aspiring to take on leadership roles in civic engagement and government. We also spotlighted the Women in Civic Engagement (WICE) Program, an incredible initiative by the Syrian Canadian Foundation aimed at paving pathways for refugee and newcomer women into politics and civic engagement.
Moreover, we shed light on our commitment to addressing the urgency of achieving hashtag#15by30 and shared about our ongoing project "Leading with Lived Experiences, Refugee Voices Shaping Higher Education’s Future." From highlighting various certificate programs in Global Forced Migration to advocating for inclusive education, we're dedicated to fostering meaningful change.
A heartfelt thank you to all the incredible attendees for your unwavering interest and invaluable encouragement!
