CREATING A SAFER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR OVER 250 REFUGEE YOUTHS DAILY
Raise Chess Academy is a refugee youth led community based organization that is using chess as a tool to refugee youths to combat psychological trauma and help them access inclusive and quality education. RCA also works to advocate for gender inclusivity and ensure that women have a say on the decision making table.
Over the start of the year RCA with support from COHERE UGANDA Embarked on a project to create a safer learning Environment for over 250+ refugee youths that attends our programs daily. The project has two main objectives;
- To ensure that learning and supporting materials such as books, whiteboards, computers, pens, markers among others are available to support participants and coaches in their learning and teaching journeys at RCA.
- To build a safer structure for youths to learn and study that is free from harm, injuries and can help the youths to access it in all weather conditions without any worries.
- The project will also provide the youths access to more knowledge such as farming knowledge where youths who are interested in farming can learn from. This is because RCA is not just regarded as a playing center but regarded as a bridge for success for refugee youths.
The project has three main activities which include construction of a two wooden class rooms, procure support learning materials and help set up a learning farm form youths.
The project has been a life changing opportunity and many refugee youths are already enjoying some of the results it has brought.
Thanks to the support of COHERE and Its partners that are doing wonders for many refugees.

We are really happy with the support from our partner because we can not do it a lone
There are a few lessons that we have learned and these include;
- Its not only a teacher or a student that matters in learning process but also good facilities counts.
- Its important to keep everyone in mind when providing services and support for example is the set up activities that allows the participation of both abled and disables participants .
- Having good facilities attracts youths and encourages them to attend school
- Projects are a short term but the results they bring are long lasting and impactful to the beneficiaries
- We have learned that partners and supporters play a huge role in what we do because it difficult to achieve our goals without support in any form that is needed
