CREATING A SAFER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT FOR OVER 250 REFUGEE YOUTHS DAILY

Raise Chess Academy is a refugee youth led community based organization that is using chess as a tool to combat psychological trauma and help refugee children & youths access inclusive and quality education. RCA also works to advocate for gender inclusivity and ensure that women have a say on the decision making table.

with Support and funding from  GLOBAL WHOLE BEING FUND we Embarked on a project to create a safer learning Environment for over 250+ refugee youths and children  that attends our programs daily.  The project will run from 14 February 2024 to 14 December 2024. The project target  to create a safer and wider learning environment for children to freely learn and engage with their peers. This means that two wooden rooms are already constructed and a farm has been constructed to provide more learning opportunities for youths in Nakivale refugee settlement.

  The project has three main objectives;

  1. To ensure that learning and supporting materials such as books, whiteboards, computers, pens, markers among others are available to support participants and coaches in their learning and teaching journeys at RCA.
  2. To build  a safer structure for youths to learn and study that is free from harm, injuries and can help the youths to access it in all weather conditions without any worries.
  3. The project will also provide the youths access to more knowledge such as farming knowledge where youths who are interested in farming can learn from. This is because RCA is not just regarded as a playing center but regarded as a bridge for success for refugee youths.

The project has three main activities which include construction of a two wooden class rooms, procure support learning materials like white boards, markers, books, pens and  and Help starting a Farm for the community to gain knowledge.

Over the past months some of the things which has been done include; contruction of two wooden classrooms, procurement of class materials such as white boards, benches,  books, pens, makers, chats a mong others and also construction of a farm house dedicated to providing more knowledge to the youths.

The project has been a life changing opportunity and over 250  refugee youths and children are access our facilities monthly.

Thanks to the support of COHERE and Its partners that are doing wonders for many refugees.

The road to impacting the community with know farming knowledge begins

Farming is one of the practices that provides foods and income to the families and communities in our country and continents, However, many still luck knowledge and experiences in different areas of the agriculture industry yet agriculture is the back bone of our community and country at large.

That is why RCA with the Support and funding from GLOBAL WHOLE BEING FUND through COHERE UGANDA  started a goat and chicken farm to provide knowledge and experience the community needs which they can use to improve their lives. The farm shall also be a supplementary income generating activity for us as an organization.

The construction of the farm is completes and currently is a home for over 15 goats and 10 local chickens play around and eating anything they see eatable.

There are a few lessons that we have learned and these include;

  1. Its not only a teacher or a student that matters in learning process but also  good facilities counts.
  2. Its important to keep everyone in mind when providing services and support for example is the set up activities that allows the participation of both abled and disables participants .
  3.  Having good facilities attracts youths and encourages them to attend school
  4. Projects are a short term but the results they bring are long lasting and impactful to the beneficiaries
  5. We have learned that partners and supporters play a huge role in what we do because it difficult to achieve our goals without support in any form that is needed
