In partnership with COHERE under the Challenge Fund for Youth Employment (CFYE) project, Tomorrow Vijana conducted a practical training session on weed management for various youth farmer groups in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement.
Our Community Based Trainer(CBT) shared hands-on knowledge on effective weed control,an essential factor in achieving high maize yields. Participants learned that early weed control (2–3 weeks after planting) is crucial, as this is when plant roots develop and weeds release chemical inhibitors that can hinder growth. A second weeding at 5–6 weeks after planting was recommended to maintain crop quality. Control methods discussed included manual (hand hoes and pulling) and chemical approaches.
Training Objectives:
• Equip farmers with knowledge on common weed types and their effects on crops.
• Build skills in preventive, cultural, manual, and chemical weed control methods.
• Emphasize early weed control and routine field monitoring to minimize yield losses.
The training enhanced the capacity of 239 youth farmers (forming 10 youth farmer groups) to implement effective and sustainable weed management practices, promoting collective weeding, peer learning, and improved understanding of integrated weed management techniques fostering higher productivity and resilience within their communities.

As part of agribusiness component, Tomorrow Vijana has established a poultry demonstration and learning farm that is transforming both livelihoods and learning opportunities within the refugee and host communities. The initiative was designed to strengthen agricultural knowledge, improve household nutrition, and promote environmentally sustainable practices through an integrated farming approach. The poultry farm serves as a practical training hub, where farmers, youth, and caregivers gain hands-on experience in poultry management, feeding, disease control, and agribusiness planning. This experiential learning model empowers participants to establish and manage their own poultry enterprises at household level, fostering self-reliance and income generation. Beyond its training role, the farm demonstrates environmental innovation, chicken droppings are recycled as organic manure in vegetable gardens, improving soil fertility and increasing crop yields. This circular model not only minimizes waste but also builds a sustainable link between livestock and crop production, reinforcing regenerative agriculture principles. The poultry initiative further strengthens household food and nutrition security by increasing access to affordable sources of protein from eggs and meat. Meanwhile, the sale of poultry products provides a steady source of income for families, enhancing their economic resilience. Crucially, the project contributes to Tomorrow Vijana’s institutional sustainability. Income generated from the poultry enterprise is reinvested into ongoing community programs, supporting capacity-building activities, agricultural inputs, and youth mentorship. This model ensures that donor investments create long-term value and expanding Tomorrow Vijana’s reach and impact across the settlement

At Tomorrow Vijana, under the CASCADE Project, we are sowing the seeds of change in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement. In five schools, we are promoting nutrition and challenging harmful gender norms that limit women’s and children’s right to healthy food.
Through Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD) and the establishment of school gardens supported with seedlings and fruit trees, learners are gaining hands-on agricultural skills and real access to nutritious foods.
These students are not just learning — they are leading. They are becoming advocates for change in their homes, schools, and communities.
“Let women choose, let children eat free, nutritious foods for health — a right to see. No customs hold back, no norms confine, food for all — a human basic need.”

This week, Tomorrow Vijana distributed essential agricultural inputs, including different variety vegetable seeds, hoes, pangas, spray cans, Tarpaulins and knapsack sprayers, to facilitate hands-on learning in best agronomic practices. Six youth groups benefited from these inputs, strengthening their capacity to engage in productive farming. Additionally, each group will receive livestock to further enhance their practical learning experience and support sustainable livelihoods. Through these efforts, Tomorrow Vijana remains committed to equipping young people with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to thrive in agribusiness, driving food security and economic resilience within their communities.

Our three-days assessment was successfully completed, reaching 32 children. We worked alongside an occupational therapist from 3 Stars to track their progress in learning, mobility, and behavior.
Additionally, two champion caregivers, recently trained in disability support, trained 10 new caregivers of children with disabilities (CWDS). The training covered key topics, including:
- *Nutrition:* Proper feeding and appropriate feeding positions for CWDS.
- *Understanding Disability:* Causes, symptoms, prevention, and support strategies. Caregivers of children with mobility challenges were also trained in stretching exercises. Some of these children will receive assistive devices such as neck collars and toilet seats to enhance their mobility and comfort.
